As others have said, Exchange and Mobile Me. Both are fast.

Without Jailbreaking, not much beyond making sure you have all the alert sounds turned on (Settings>Sounds).

I think these are the only apps I've used on any mobile device that I'd describe as 'mind boggling cool'.
