AT&T iPhone Use Outside of the US?

Hi,

I have an original iPhone and will be out of the country on July 11th but that's another story.

My question is: Has anyone used their iPhone outside the US, specifically in Ecuador? We'll be there on the 11th - 18th and I'm trying to avoid carrying my old faithful iPAQ 6945 as backup. I ran into a non-connection situation in Thailand and don't want to be in the same one in Ecuador.

AT&T's WS says I'll have coverage in Quito and Cuenca but doesn't really say much about data and just how automatic the network/system link up will be.
