Pay as you go for iPhone 1st gen

This past week I won an 8GB 1st gen iPhone. I would like to set this up as a pay as you go for one of kids. I tried to the the 999.99.9999 SS trick in iTunes 7.7 but it said the soc. was invalid. Does anyone now if I need to use an older version of iTunes?
