Lookin for info
I want to give my wife my 1st generation Iphone. She already has a phone with AT&T. SHe does not need the data plan but AT&T won't switch it without one. Is it possible for me to take the simm card out of her current phone, put it in the iphone and have it work as just a phone or do I need to do something else to it? If I do what and how? I'm no techie!

No you will not be able to do that is the simple answer. Not unless you looked into hacking it.
