Default Upgrading MAC Memory

I'm thinking of adding more memory to my IMAC and Macbook. Is it best to buy through Apple or can you gurus recommend some good sites?

I bought a matched set from Crucial for my MacBook Pro and iMac a while back. Apple uses Samsung memory, but charge a premium for it. Amazon is okay as long as you know your brands.

4GB for my iMac was under a hundred bucks 6 months ago. Crazy cheap.

I added 4 gigs to my 24 iMac and my girlfriends 20 iMac. It is so easy to install.

I used OWC. They have a very easy website that ensures you get the correct RAM you need.

More great tips. Thanks Dooks. I have 2GB in my IMAC and only 1GB in my Macbook so I'm thinking it's time for a memory boost.

Can it really be that cheap, $49 for 2GB x 2? I'm astounded. And if I have determined the correct memory, it looks like I should be able to swap my present 2Gb to my Macbook from my IMac and then install the new 4Gb to the IMac. I purchased both systems late 2007 so it looks like they both take DDR SDRAM 667 MHZ. That's what both Macs list under memory info and then I looked at the Apple site and it said pc2-5300. Does that sound correct? I don't want to mess anything up!

That sounds correct. I know the iMac uses laptop memory.

I paid $99 for 2 x 2gb about a year and a half ago. I heard the prices have gone down recently. So I guess $50 sounds right.

OK, I wasn't sure about the memory being compatible for both devices. That's great. I'll be ordering pronto!

Question Just installed new memory, having issues

Well, I didn't exactly order the memory PRONTO, but I received my 2G x 2 DDR Sdram 667MHZ pc2-5300 today. I removed the 2 1G cards from the IMAC and installed the new memory without issue increasing it to 4GIGs. Great!

Then my plan was to install the 2 old 1Gig cards from the IMAC in to my 13 inch Macbook. So I killed my eyes undoing those ridiculous THREE microscopic screws, got out the 2 512G cards and installed my old 1 Gig cards in the Macbook. Put it all back together cursing vehemently while re- tightening the microscopic screws, popped the battery back in place, booted her up and it is only recognizing 1 module of memory and states the 2nd bay is empty. I have reinstalled both memory cards 3 times now making sure they are securely in place, even switching the cards between bays and it still only recognizes 1 memory card.

Any suggestions? Here I thought I'd be increasing my memory for both MAC's with one purchase and I still only have 1Gig of memory in the Macbook. Should I try installing one of the 512G cards to see if it is recognized along with the one of the 1G cards?

Thanks!

what happens when you put the 1 gig card with the 512 card? does it see both cards with that config? How old is the macbook?
