Default New Competitor? Nokia N900

Ok, folks the linked article is very long, but worth reading. It explains why Nokia has been sitting quietly while Apple and Android and Palm have been eating away at its market share.

Article:
Mobile-review.com First look at Nokia RX-51 aka Nokia N900

If true this phone will have it all and be more OPEN than any other phone out there because it uses Linux and does not try to break compatibility with the Native OS, like Apple and Google did.
  • MAP3 CPU/GPU, (ARM Cortex-A8 )
    3,5" 800x480 touchscreen, (resistive - ouch)
keyboard, (queue the keyboard whiners in 3, 2, 1,,,)
    Wi-Fi,
    HSPA,
    GPS; (Nokia OWNS Navteq)
Can use external GPS as well (TomTom, Garmin, etc)
    5-MP camera,
    CZ lens,
    Camera Flash,
    32 GB storage,
    SD slot (hot-swappable);
X11 screen driver (standard in Linux and OSX),
    VT100 terminal emulator,
    APT package manager (standard Ubuntu/Debian)
    USB, TV-Out
1320mha battery (means nothing till we see runtimes)
    Bluetooth
    Notifications (including indicator led)
    Web browser with Flash support
    File transfer/sync (documents etc)
    Exchange compatibility
Virtual (on screen) keyboard - so they are not Married to the hardware keyboard (stop whining now).

Estimated price without subsidy: $780 USD. The phone is supposed to hit the shelves late in 2009.

But the neatest thing is it is Linux, and not crippled linux, so you will be able to side load apps. Will ATT let it into the US? Probably after they force Nokia to give it a lobotomy.

Do hop over and read the review and specs. Its very well written.

But be aware this article was screen shot from a working prototype and things may change before release, and there are indications of other Themes available (and being linux there will be hundreds to choose from in a year).

A very interesting read.

What makes you think Nokia has been sitting quietly in the first place? On a global basis, they still have a larger market share than anyone else in the smartphone business. We just don't see them as much in the US.

Slide out keyboard? Beh.

Saw this posted somewhere else as well. Looks nice but I am not sure that this a competitor to the "smartphone" market. It talks of a GSM sim card but for Data only. Not Voice.

Still looks good though.

Well I was makeing a perfectly opaque reference to this story:

Which shows all the smart-phones eating Nokia's lunch.

Brickman: Its a Phone ! It talks on GSM too.

Because its nokia, you can be assured it will handle GSM, EVDO, LTE, CDMA, WCDMA. They don't mess around.

Where did you get the idea it wouldn't talk on GSM?

From this guy who has been a VERY reliable and avid Nokia fan/user. He may be wrong. There is still a lot not known about the device, but that is where I got my Info.

icebike...a 2.4% drop still leaves Nokia with more than twice the market share of anyone else. Eating Nokia's crumbs, maybe. But their lunch? Pulease.
