I am much happier than I'd expected to be with the iPhone. However, the calendar alerts are nonexistent even with 3rd party help. There needs to be a real alarm that is repeatable - I'm not so concerned about the sound as long as it is loud. I'm spending way too much time looking at my calendar now to make sure I don't miss something.

My problem is that you can't attach the photo, or a document, directly in the e-mail program.
You can copy any picture/photo which is on your phone, or from internet, etc, and paste it in your email.

Default iPhone is harder to develop for than the Treo

I used several Treo Palm models over about three years (Treo 300, 350, 550) and was very happy with the OS and applications. However, syncing to my Mac was always problematic - often the syncing didn't run to completion. Something got corrupted early on and the thing never truly worked properly afterwards, despite many attempts at correcting this. Finally, I switched to the iPhone when I could see there were plenty of aps coming out for it. I was worried about the keyboard - I liked the touch feedback of the Treo keyboard, but I have to say that I use my iPhone for far more applications now than I ever did with the Treo. And syncing via iTunes is a charm!

My biggest beef about the iPhone is that I dabble in programming on my Mac (mostly Java) and I did develop some code for the Treo. I've looked at the development kit for the iPhone, but it is significantly more complex for an amateur like me and probably means that I will never code for the iPhone. Too bad, as the platform is superb!

I just found out this feature less than a week ago. Also nice to be able to copy and paste multiple photos at full resolution into one email.

A few additional comments...

- The copy/pasting of photos is neat. Apple got a lot of flak for taking so long to do copy/paste, but their implementation of it allows for copying stuff besides text (e.g., photos) whereas the competition does not. That said, it does seem unfriendly for them to not have an "add attachment" button within the email app which also allows for browsing through/adding photos.

- The notification system is rather lame. I hear a chime and don't even bother checking my phone because it's usually an email. When I turn the phone on, there's no special indication that anything particularly new came in or what it was. I like how the old Palm OS had a flashing asterisk and tapping on it would show a list of your last several notifications. The Google Android pull-down list of notifications is quite slick and should be copied by Apple.

- I don't much care for the iTunes software. I don't know where to begin. Today I was searching for apps and kept getting an error. Every fifth time or so it might work. Not sure if this was a local network issue or because the iTunes store was just busy. And the iTunes layout basically look like a cluttered display of tiled apps/ads all over the place. They not only need categories implemented within the iPhone OS/GUI itself, they also ought to better design the layout/categorization of things in the iTunes store GUI. I'm also still trying to figure out how to have a central music library stored on the external hard drive hooked up to my desktop computer which the local iTunes app on my laptop shows updated live. I rip a CD/add some MP3's to the hard drive on my desktop, then launch iTunes on my laptop and it doesn't show the newly added music without me selecting File > Add folder to library... from the drop-down menu.

Three issues for me:
1. There is no way to set reminders for birthdays that I include with a person contact information.
2. No way of easily setting up meetings that occur periodically like the first Monday of every month.
3. Spotlight does not seem to search the field note within a contact.

I agree with the other posts about notifications and Calendar lameness coming from PalmOS. Lots to like about the iPhone but those areas felt like a sacrifice. It is odd to have so few features in these areas. I miss HiLauncher as well! Actually any way to just go from one program to another. But, I find the iPhone 3G to be fast enough at getting to the Home screen and then launching apps from my first screen or two that it's not a big deal. I notice that apps 3 or more pages back don't get used as much and I think I just forget about them :-O PalmOS had a different "feel" in the Contacts app, but I'm getting used to the iPhone. Voice Dialing with the 3GS will be a nice features well to further separate the devices... I know there's aftermarket stuff for PalmOS, but I tried several and personally had minimal success so gave up. I miss being able to tweak system settings with programs like Butler and Profiles. The Apple patents recently discussed in the forums leave me hopeful something like Profiles is forthcoming.

For ScottR, I appreciate your comments about the customizability of PalmOS and I liked that a lot. I do think that Apple's more restrictive approach is part of why the iPhone has been, at least for me, significantly more stable as a device than my Treo/Centro ever was. Resets were a common phenomenon with my Treos and I have had zero with 7 months of iPhone use which is an enormous reduction. The device just seems more stable to me than PalmOS devices were... unless I left it with no third party apps on board which basically would have negated a lot of the benefit of PalmOS in the first place!

Default ipod touch

Hi,

ok so I've been a palm guy since 1996. Palm IIIXE, Palm V, Treo 600, Treo 650, Treo 700P, Treo 700WX (ok win mob sucks!) Palm TX, and now blackberry and ipod touch. (contemplating Palm Pre, but Pre suffers same fate in my mind that iphone does.

My main issue is this... I liked that Palm felt more like a computer than iphone/ipod touch does. I say this for a number of reasons
1) I could create network connections and do bluetooth DUN to get internet access on my. while my blackberry supports this I can't get my iPod touch to connect DUN.
2) Palm had file system access. PRC, PDB files... I knew how the thing worked. iPhone and Palm Pre are locked up so tight I feel like I can only do what the magic developers let me do.
3) QUICK access to everything with hard keys. a calandar, email, phone, home button... HARD KEY! it was one simple action and BAM I'm in the calandar. touch interface is just too much work to get into the calendar. I couldget to 8 applications with hard keys and option key without even looking at the device, and then when I lifted it to look at it, it was already where I wanted to be.
4) integration of apps... palm had awesome "home screen" kinda things. shsh.com with takephone, 2day, 4cast provided great one screen access to lots of info across the application. with iphone I have to look at a stupid picture of a fish or whatever. Palm pre has coral, whatever! I want a home screen to integrate my IM, new messages, (have to give props to win mob which was good on this too, but sucked in all other ways).

Default Ex-Palm OS Treo users: Likes and Dislikes about the iPhone

There are many things that I miss about the Palm platform. Up until last month I was still running a Treo 680 that reset daily - multiple times.

Miss:
Handy Shopper
Key Suite
SnapperMail
DateDiff
CallLog+

It is hard to believe that there has not been a shopping list application created that works as well as Handy Shopper. I am trying to get by with SplashShopper on the iPhone 3Gs. The multiple options to display lists and compare prices has not been matched. Oh and set ALARMS on specific items.

Key Suite just worked. If there was a data field in Outlook (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Journal) it showed up on the Treo. Categories and Reminders. If it was categorized in Outlook I would see it on the Treo. A reminder would display for important tasks, with the option of a follow-up in 15 minutes. Contact Reminders, Task Reminders, Calendar Reminders.

SnappperMail Ok so it was not push, but able to have different accounts different signature lines. I was using VersaMail with BlackberryConnect for office email. This allowed for a separate alert tone for work (VersaMail) and personal email (SnapperMail).

Keyboard shortcuts. Although some of this functionality was removed in the 600/680 transition (cannot recall). I loved the idea/implementation of "ds" inserting a date stamp and "dts" a date and time stamp. I think this was customizable on the 600.

Search. Yes the 3Gs searches, but not third party apps. The Treo searches everything.

The biggest disappointment has been notifications, Outlook Task syncing, and a day home/view page.

Nearing the end of my 30 days, but the speed, email rendering (love html), and iTunes integration will keep me in the iPhone camp for now. Been reading about the issues on the Pre. Too early on the new platform. Maybe an iPhone jailbreaking session is on the horizon.

Handspring Visor -> Treo 180 -> 600 -> BB Curve -> 680 -> BB Bold -> 680 -> iPhone 3Gs

Yes hard keys! Seems as though there are more actions/keystrokes required to get to where you want to be on the iPhone. When scanning lists on the Treo press a letter key and you are able to jump to that letter.
