Default Mail Setup Help - University GMail Account

iPhone noob here (3GS)...

I have an alumni email that is run through GMail but does not use "@gmail.com" - instead uses "@gwmail.gwu.edu" (yes, I go to an overpriced school, I know). I'm trying to set it up on my 3GS but am having a host of issues:

1. Outgoing mail - not sure how to configure the outgoing server. Currently I have Host Name: smtp.gmail.com; User Name: xxx@gwmail.gwu.edu and my email account password. Incoming mail is working, but...

2. No link between mobile email and computer-accessed email. None of my archive folders are recognized and it has automatically marked every single message in my inbox or archives as unread. How to I get GMail to tell my phone the full story and does the fact that my address isn't @gmail.com an issue

Help is much appreciated, thanks!!

Follow the instructions in this link:

iPhone or iPod touch - Gmail Help

instead of @gmail.com in the email address bar, add @gwmail.gwu.edu

I read the info at that link and already have it set up with "@gwmail.gwu.edu" in the address bar (POP acount info). Any other ideas?

Did you try to set it up as IMAP or POP? You should set up as IMAP.

Here's exactly what I have in the iPhone email account settings:

POP Account Info
Name: First Last
Address: xxx@gwmail.gwu.edu
Description xxx@gwmail.gwu.edu

Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: imap.gmail.com
User Name: xxx@gwmail.gwu.edu
Password: xxx

Outgoing Mail Server
Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: xxx@gwmail.gwu.edu
Password: xxx
Use SSL: Off

I have a couple of differences in my settings. I have SSL set to ON, and I don't have user and password under outgoing setings. Not sure if that will change anything.

If that doesnt work:
-delete account and add it again
-make sure IMAP is enabled on your mail account (on gmail.com)
-Contact your university's help desk

One other question. Do you have this email set up on another service like Outlook or Mail.app?

You have to ask someone at your school if it's even possible for you to set your email up on your phone. Some schools don't allow it. I know my girlfriends university's email can not be set up on her iPhone.

The school does allow it and links to the GMail Help pages for setup:

(Add "https" to below as I don't have enough posts to insert links yet)
://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702

I have everything set up exactly the way shown but still can't send mail from my phone. There's no troubleshooting for SMTP with GMail so I'm not sure where to turn next. Any other thoughts?

Did you ask your school for these settings?
