Default iPod Shuffle recharging

I plugged my iPod shuffle into my computer at work (no iTunes installed) in order to re-charge it. It would not stop blinking. I was finally able to figure out that this meant it was in "disc mode." Many sites say to 'eject' it and then it will give you a solid amber (charging) or solid green (fully charged). However, when I eject it, I get no light at all (as if the computer doesn't acknowledge that it is plugged in any more). So here's my question: when it is plugged in and in "disc mode" (blinking amber), is it also recharging while in disc mode??
