Best software for converting videos (DVD) for use on iPhone?

Hi guys, can I check with you somethings. I'm never ripped a DVD and convert them to mp4 before. Doing it right now.
1. Just wondering what is the typical expected mp4 file size after it's being converted ?
2.How long does it take to convert a dvd to mp4 using handbrake ?

I just want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. Thanks in advance .

Here are a couple of things you can do.

1) Handbrake is a good option, which I've tried since I saw the post about the program here on TiPB. At least, I'm pretty sure the article was here. What I did discover was that I needed to run another program, in this case, DVD43, in the background, to get Handbrake to be able to run (PC). I've been pleased with the quality of the finished product and the amount of time that it takes to . I've been noticing that movies encoded with Handbrake for iPhone result in files between 750 MB to 1.3 GB. The best deal about this set-up is that the program is free!

2) I've been a long-time fan of "FairUse Wizard" which I originally used to convert movies for my Dell Axims. The program's "auto" options for iPod and iPhone yield smaller movie files, but the quality suffers, especially on "dark" movies, such as Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Batman Begins. FairUse is available for a modest fee, and updates are free as well (or they have been). I also like the batch-file options with FairUse for converting DVDs of TV shows (like "The Office"). I'm not sure how Handbrake handles such issues...I haven't worked with it enough yet.

3) Both these programs take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to convert a movie to an iTunes accepted format. From what I've heard, this is about normal, and considering that most movies are 1.5 to 2.5 hours long, real time encoding seems acceptable to me. Perhaps in the future, encoding will take minutes....but the technology just isn't there yet for the end user.

4) I've used several other conversion methods, and I don't really recommend dealing with other methods when "one-click" options do the job, arguably better than when individuals "mess around" with various settings on several programs to create the "perfect movie."

5) Do your encoding when you have time. Set your computer to work as you leave in the morning; or set it to encode while you're sleeping. In no time at all, you'll have a healthy collection of movies available for your iPod.

6) Don't forget that you can tag movies in iTunes, just like audio files. I always do a search for the movie posters of any movie I've imported into iTunes (an important step, of course, if you want a movie on your iPod Touch or iPhone), and I paste those posters as the album artwork of the movie...it works great! You'll have to personally decide which movies you want to bring with you at any time...with a 16GB iPod Touch, I never bring more than four with me at any time. I'm really hoping for a 32GB iPhone release next week...

7) And I really do own all the movies I encode...so I believe that I am existing fully under copyright law as I don't share my collection with anyone else (other than my wife!)

I recently noticed that my "Digital Copy" of Wall-E was encoded at 853X356. Does anyone know of any software with will create these resolution files for the iPhone?

It is probably because I am an idiot but I can't actually get the video that Handbrake has worked on onto my iPod (no iphone yet but hoping soon ). Once it finished, Handbrake automatically set the icon up to be on my desktop. I dragged it to iTunes but the video will not go over. I know it has to be something simple but I have read the wiki over at Handbrake and am just not getting it.

DVD Smith is freeware and is great if you just copy DVD to your hard drive. For DVD to DVD copying, I recommended Movie DVD Copy. It is a pretty good DVD Copy program that rip protected DVDs. I've been using it all the time and never miss backing up a DVD. These two software can be found at movie-dvd-copy.com
