Default Iphone iPod Music Levels

I've noticed that when I rip older CD's, that the music levels are faint compared to the newer stuff I load. I've tried to use the iTunes "auto-leveling" feature but to me it doesn't work.

Are there any other alternatives available to make all songs on the iPod the same sound level? TIA
