Default Native App Review: ApolloIM v0.1.2

ApolloIM was the first native app to provide AOL Instant Messaging. Although it's a little rough around the edges, it's a solid first attempt at an IM client. It's currently in version 0.1.2 and developing quickly. Read on to see what works, what doesn't, and what we might expect from future versions.

See that problem with all these IM apps they probably won't be allowed to run as a background process. If that's the case, I would like to see the same type of notifications as the txt msgs. You always appear online (unless you specifically sign off) and when someone sends you an IM you can open the app and see the msg and reply.

Right, but the review did say that this one does at least try to run in the background. However, I do have to agree with the review, and say that it crashes, A LOT, which sucks. MobileChat is another application that works a ton better, though it doesn't support background operation (if I remember correctly). It looks a lot nicer, with the conversation view looking really nice like the SMS app.

Version 3.0 of this app is scheduled to come out with the 2.0 firmware release over the Apple Store. You can read more about it here: http://tumblr.twenty08.com/

Update: I reread their page, and it seems like it will have some sort of queuing mechanism to let you still get messages when not connected to the net/in sleep mode: http://tumblr.twenty08.com/post/3556...t-and-re-built

i personally like to use the web apps like bee jive for online instant messaging, it just doesnt keep wi fi connection alive for a while sometimes. otherwise, i use mobile chat when i want to use native apps, but the scrolling is weird there and apollo always freezes on me.
