Default Unlocked iPhone 3G

I've been scouring the web for an answer to this, and so far I haven't found a clear one (amazingly enough!)

I have a legally unlocked iPhone 3G (from Australia) and I would like to know if I can use an existing Softbank simcard in it (either prepaid or otherwise). In other words, can I pull the prepaid simcard out of my current Softbank phone, put it into the iPhone and get prepaid service?

Much less likely I know, will I have any capacity to send and receive email to my Softbank address?
