Roaming in France (UK customer)

Hey guys i have the iphone on O2 in the UK and im going to France on holiday. I need to use the internet while im away, but the only data bolt on O2 offers is £20 for just 10Mb! They also do a 50Mb bolt on but its £50 ($82) which is far too much for me.

How far will 10Mb get me on the internet/emails on the iphone?

Are there any other options e.g. unlocking my iphone and buying a sim card in the country i go to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
