As Alli said, it's all up to your carrier to support MMS. Contact them, you may have to change some settings in the phone or they may push a carrier update to you.

I'm with O2 here in the UK and there was no set-up required. Once you activate your iPhone-specific tariff you automatically receive a picture message saying you're up and running to send & recieve.
Not sure how it'll work for you though... |

Well the fact that the OP was saying they didn't have MMS would have made me assume it was a new iPhone owner in the US as well.
